If you’re starting to learn Korean, you’ve probably heard of Hangul – the Korean alphabet.
But did you know that Hangul wasn’t always the writing system of Korea? In fact, it was created by King Sejong the Great in the 15th century to help common people read and write Korean more easily.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the fascinating story of Hangul, why King Sejong decided to create it, and how this writing system transformed Korean society

🕰️— Before Hangul: Korea Used Chinese Characters
Before the invention of Hangul, Koreans wrote using Classical Chinese characters (Hanja).
These characters were difficult to learn, especially for common people who didn’t have access to education.
Only the elite and scholars could read and write fluently, which made communication, education, and record-keeping hard for the general population.
This was a major problem for a king who cared deeply about his people.
👑— Who Was King Sejong the Great?
King Sejong (1418–1450), ruler during the Joseon Dynasty, is one of Korea’s most respected monarchs.
He was known for his wisdom, compassion, and deep interest in science, technology, and education.
He believed that language should be easy and accessible to everyone, not just the wealthy or well-educated.
✍️— The Creation of Hangul: A Writing System for the People
In 1443, King Sejong began working with a group of scholars to design a new alphabet.
In 1446, he officially announced it in a document called the Hunminjeongeum — meaning “the correct sounds for the instruction of the people.”
This new alphabet, now called Hangul, was revolutionary:
- 14 consonants and 10 vowels
- Simple, logical shapes based on mouth and tongue position
- Easy to learn — King Sejong said, “A wise man can learn it in a morning, and even a fool can learn it in ten days.”

🌏— Why Hangul Is So Important Today
Thanks to King Sejong, Korea became one of the few countries with a scientifically designed alphabet made for its language.
Today, Hangul is praised worldwide for its simplicity and efficiency.
Every October 9th, South Korea celebrates Hangul Day to honor this achievement.
👉Fun fact: North Korea celebrates it too, on January 15th!
